Registration

In Alberta, the legislation regulating the profession of midwifery requires that a person must be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta and hold an active practice permit to practice midwifery. 

Please note: Midwifery services are publicly funded through Alberta Health Services. We recommend that if you are applying for any midwifery position you ensure the position is funded by contacting Alberta Health Services at:  midwives@ahs.ca  

For Registration, an applicant must:

• have successfully completed an approved program* of midwifery studies;
• have successfully completed practice requirements as set out in the Midwives Profession Regulation (sec 3);
• have successfully completed the approved examinations;
• have
  • completed the above requirements within two years of application, or
  • completed an approved refresher program within one year of application
• hold valid certification in neonatal resuscitation (NRP), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), obstetrical emergencies skills (ES) and Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS).

* Approved program means educational programs approved by the College of Midwives of Alberta. There are several Canadian midwifery programs that have been approved. These include programs at University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Toronto Metropolitan University, and Laurentian University (Ontario), Universite de Trois-Rivieres (Quebec), University of Manitoba (Manitoba) and Mount Royal University (Calgary).

Routes to Alberta Midwifery Registration:

1. New Graduates from an approved Canadian Midwifery Education Program
2. Midwives registered with another Canadian province
3. Internationally educated Midwives

For graduate of an out of province program that are not registered with CMA - please use the "Application" button at the top of the main page

For Registration under this route, an applicant must: 

• • Provide proof of successful completion of Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE)
  • Provide original documentation of graduation, including transcripts
  • Upload proof of Current Certification in: CPR (valid within 2 years), ES (valid within 2 years), FHS through Perinatal Services BC (valid within 2 years) and NRP (valid within 1 year). You can find more information on CMA's approved courses here. 
  • Provide a current criminal record with vulnerable sector check (within 1 year)
  • Provide evidence of professional liability insurance 
  • Be legally entitled to work as a midwife in Canada 
  • For Out of Province applicants - submit payment of Registration application fee ($300)
  • Submit payment of Practice Permit fee*: 
    
    • $390.00/month - based on months of practice
    • $379.16/month - based on renewal for the full year

Under the agreement for mobility between Canadian Regulators, a midwife who is registered in one Province may apply for registration in another Canadian jurisdiction.

For Registration under this route, an applicant must:

• Submit an Application for new registration through the "application" button on the top of the main page
• Request a Letter of Professional Standing from your previous and current provincial regulatory body(s): must be sent directly from regulator
• Provide a current criminal record with vulnerable sector check (within 1 year)
• Be legally entitled to work as a midwife in Canada 
• Submit payment of Registration application fee ($300)
• Submit payment of Practice Permit fee*:
